Feeding on the Word

John 6:57 - As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.

All through the Bible Jesus commands us Himself to seek Him. He is the Living Water and the Bread of Life. We are to feed on Him. Sounds a bit odd unless you totally understand what the Word is. I've mentioned previously about some of the names of Jesus. He is the Word made Flesh. He is the Bread of Life. He is the Living Water.

We can be sustained by bread and water in the natural and we can be sustained on bread and water in the spiritual. But feeding on the Word? Yes!! If Jesus is the Word and He is the Bread and Water, oh, how we can be sustained. As we study Scripture and let it speak to us we are feeding on His Word. He is filling us with our daily bread. We are being filled spiritually.

In the natural we have cravings. Certain food prompts certain responses and desires. When we crave the Word and all it has for us we are more than satisfied...and yet we crave even more. How I love that. It fills us. It fills our souls, minds and spirits and at the same time it leaves us wanting more. I think the term is: "It tastes like more!"

Continuing to be fed through the Word of God gives us life--the Bread of His Word, who is Jesus. If something is mentioned several times in the Bible, it must be important. Jesus Himself repeatedly tells us:

"I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven--not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever." (John 6:35, 47-48, 50-51, 57-58)

Let us continue to feed on the Word and sit at the feet of Jesus and take in all that He has for us, the life giving bread of His Word. The more we seek Him, the more satisfied we will become.

John 6:32 Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

Lord, I thank You for Your Word, for the Bread from Heaven that sustains. I thank You that all throughout Your Word, from beginning to end, it's all about You. It's all about a life so enriched and filled with You. Give us this day our daily bread! Give us a lifetime of Your bread.

  1. Oh the Book of John is so rich! Great explanation, Laurie, of why He calls Himself the Bread!
